The prostate gland is a vital component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's most primary role is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human's prostate gland is a bit larger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated blood PSA results could signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been detected that medications such as Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
