The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its primary function is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A sound human prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Elevated pSA blood results could signify disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual purposes.
