The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's most important function is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy man's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases completely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results might suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel are useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
