The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's principle function is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate gland is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in very extreme cases completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised test results can highly suggest disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel can be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
