The prostate is a vital component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its leading job is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older-aged men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been noted that medicines such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or for strictly sexual purposes.
