The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most primary role is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased man's prostate is somewhat larger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can impede the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme situations totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to strike elderly males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results could signify disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel could be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
