The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its most important function is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human's prostate is a bit bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can occlude the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medications or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
