Welcome to this webpage about enlarged prostateultrasound
The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's predominant role is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is part of semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme cases completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.
In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).
Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated pSA blood results can signify disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been detected that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
