The prostate gland is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most paramount function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised blood PSA results could suggest disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been noticed that drugs like Docetaxel may be effective in treating prostate cancer.
