The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most significant role is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased human's prostate is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated pSA blood results can signal disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been noted that medicines such as Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual fulfillment.
