The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its main function is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised test results might signal disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has recently been observed that drugs such as Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
