The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its chief role is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is part of seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can signify disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs like Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.
