The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's leading role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results might highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been noticed that drugs such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
