The prostate gland is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most primary function is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a component of semen. A healthy human's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can block the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results might highly suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or strictly sexual purposes.
