The prostate is part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's main role is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound individual's prostate gland is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results could signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or just for sexual fulfillment.
