The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its leading job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is somewhat greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised pSA blood results could be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noticed that medicines like Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
