The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most significant function is to produce and store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results can signify disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
