The prostate is an important part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle role is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate gland is a little bit bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can obstruct urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results may be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been detected that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
