The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's most important job is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is also normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that medicines including Docetaxel can be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
