The prostate gland is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's primary role is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of semen. A sound individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been found that medicines such as Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
