The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its predominant job is to secrete and store a clear liquid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A normal human prostate gland is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.
Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme situations totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.
In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medications or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).
Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results could indicate a disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel could be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
Stimulation of the prostate in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
