The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's paramount function is to first secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate is somewhat larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can obstruct urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in severe instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results might signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
