The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount job is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A non-diseased human prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects older males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised pSA blood results may highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
