The prostate is part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate gland's predominant function is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a component of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human's prostate gland is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme cases totally impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or operations.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signal disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel may be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
