The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's most primary function is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of semen. A healthy individual's prostate is slightly larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which can be normally quite low. Elevated blood PSA results might indicate a disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures.
