The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's main role is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A healthy human prostate gland is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results might highly suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been noted that medications including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
