The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's principle role is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound individual's prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can stop up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been discovered that drugs such as Docetaxel could be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
