The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its chief job is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound man's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results may signal disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
