The prostate is a vital component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its leading job is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can jam up the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results can indicate a disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been found that medicines including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual purposes.
