The prostate is really a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's primary role is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised blood PSA results could be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been discovered that drugs like Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
