The prostate gland is an important part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its most paramount job is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of semen. A healthy man's prostate is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can be an indicator of disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been observed that drugs such as Docetaxel can be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
