The prostate gland is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's most primary function is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can obstruct the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results may suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been observed that medications including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
