The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's chief role is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human's prostate gland is a little bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme cases totally impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with medication or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results could suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been noted that medicines including Docetaxel can be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
