The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's predominant function is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate is a bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.
Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe cases completely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.
In men who are elderly, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is commonly known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).
Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results could signal disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been observed that medications including Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
