The prostate is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount job is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A sound individual's prostate gland is slightly bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can obstruct the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results can signal disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been noticed that medications like Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
