The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's overriding job is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A normal human prostate is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medications or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results could highly suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been discovered that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual fulfillment.
