The prostate is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its paramount role is to secrete and store a clear liquid that is part of semen. A sound human prostate gland is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. In older-aged men, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been found that medications like Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
