The prostate is a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's chief job is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased human prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects elderly males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results can indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel are useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly sexual purposes.
