The prostate gland is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's leading role is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal individual's prostate is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Elevated test results might be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been found that medicines like Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
