The prostate is really a gland that is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its most primary function is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid. A healthy man's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been uncovered that medications like Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.
