The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's chief job is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate is slightly greater in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older men, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated pSA blood results may signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noticed that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual purposes.
