The prostate gland is a vital component of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's principle function is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A sound human prostate gland is slightly larger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results could be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been found that medications like Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
