The prostate is a vital part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its leading job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy man's prostate is a little bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can obstruct the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances entirely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older-aged males, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may signal disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been uncovered that medicines including Docetaxel could be effective in treating prostate cancer.
