The prostate is a gland that is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's predominant role is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A sound man's prostate is a little bit bigger than a walnut. Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even operations.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally quite low. Elevated test results could indicate a disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly sexual purposes.
