The prostate gland is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most important role is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A sound human prostate is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme instances completely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or operations.

In men who are elderly, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results might highly suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has just recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel are useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
