The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most paramount function is to first produce and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound human prostate gland is a little bit bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can obstruct the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in severe cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results might be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or just for sexual purposes.
