The prostate gland is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's main function is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can stop up urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that strikes older-aged males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results may suggest disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
