The prostate gland is an important part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate's primary job is to secrete and store a clear fluid that is a vital part of semen. A sound man's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can jam up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to affect older men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised test results could signify disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been noted that drugs such as Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or just for sexual purposes.
