The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's main job is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate gland is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can block the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect older men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results might suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been detected that medicines such as Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
