The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount role is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A normal human's prostate is somewhat greater in size than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has only recently been found that medications including Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly sexual purposes.
